 The Challenge

BBC Workplace has teamed up with Children in Need to put Pudsey on top of the world. Rodney Hogg, a member of BBC Workplace and an experienced mountaineer, will be part of an independent expedition team which will attempt to climb Mount Everest in 2011. The team will leave the UK at the end of March and will journey via the North East Ridge, following the George Mallory and Andrew “Sandy” Irvine 1924 British expedition route to the summit. The expedition aims to help ONE Workplace reach its £150,000 target for Children in Need.

The Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, is patron of this expedition which is being led by one of the most accomplished British explorers to date – David Hempleman-Adams. David is world famous as the first person to complete the Explorers’ Grand Slam, a challenge which has seen him conquer the North and South Magnetic and Geographic Poles and scale the highest mountain in each of the seven continents, including Everest.

The exhibition will be fully funded by money raised from corporate and individual sponsorship and we need to raise a minimum of £40,000 to get the challenge off the ground.

The Charity

Children in Need is one of the UK’s most important charities and helps transform and make positive changes to the lives of some of the most disadvantaged children and young people in the UK.

Last year’s Children in Need raised over £39 million and the charity currently supports around 2,300 projects across the UK. For every penny raised, a penny goes to a project, making a real difference to the lives of thousands of disadvantaged children and young people. Children in Need are able to make this promise because the charity uses its investment income and Gift Aid to cover all its running costs.

The Climber

Rod aBorn in Harare, Zimbabwe in 1966, Rod developed a boyhood love for the outdoors. Leaving Zimbabwe in 1979 to reside in South Africa along with his parents and two brothers saw the start of his teenage outdoor adventures and sporting achievements. After leaving school in 1984 with sporting colours in Rugby, Cricket and Athletics, he was conscripted into the South African Defence Force and joined the elite Parachute Regiment, gaining his wings in July of 1985.

On leaving the army at the end of 1986 Rod found a passion for triathlons and kayaking. With the help of his sponsors he went on to compete in the 1987 SA Triathlon Championships and in the following years completed two Iron Man triathlons, two Duzi canoe marathons, and several running marathons including the Comrades ultra marathon of 97km.

After touring to Spain in 1989 as a member of the University of Witwatersrand canoe team, Rod travelled through Europe finally settling in London in 1990. It was not until 2004 when he first experienced the thrills of rock climbing in the Lake District and from there his passion for climbing and mountaineering grew.

Rod is a devoted father of three children and has a keen interest in bee keeping, with several hives located in Richmond Park, the largest of London’s Royal Parks. He is a member of the Thames Valley Climbing Club and is currently undertaking a Mountain Leader qualification. Climbing predominantly in Scotland, Wales and the Alps over the last six years, Rod has gained a wealth of experience mostly in mixed/winter conditions. Some notable achievements have been Denali, Elbrus, Kilimanjaro, Matterhorn, Traverse of the Eiger, and Mt Blanc.

The Mountain

Mount Everest is part of the Himalaya mountain range that runs along the border of Nepal and Tibet. It was originally known as ‘Peak H’, and then ‘Peak XV’, before assuming the name Mount Everest. It was named after Sir George Everest, Surveyor General of India. All pre-World War II attempts to summit the mountain (1922, 1924, 1933, 1936, and 1938) were approached from the north, or Tibetan, side because Nepal was closed to foreigners during this time. Nepal opened its borders in 1949 and the first successful ascent was by Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay on 29 May, 1953 from the south Nepalese side.

Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world at an altitude of 8850m or 29,038 feet (commercial airplanes travel at 30,000 feet!). Atmospheric pressure on the summit of Everest has been recorded at 253mmHg. This is one-third of the atmospheric pressure found at sea level. With only one third of normal oxygen levels available, havoc is caused with the human body which is unable to acclimatise above 8,000m. At this height the body ceases to function properly and begins to deteriorate. The height level above 8000m is known as the ‘death zone’ and time spent within this zone must be kept to a minimum.

Northeast Ridge

The Northeast ridge route begins from the north side of Everest in Tibet. Expeditions trek to the Rongbuk Glacier, setting up Base Camp at 5,182m (17,000 ft) on a gravel plain just below the glacier. To reach Advanced Base Camp, climbers ascend the medial moraine of the east Rongbuk Glacier up to the base of Changtse at around 6,100m (20,000 ft). Advanced Base Camp is situated below the North Col at 6,492m (21,300 ft). To reach Camp 1 on the north col, climbers ascend the glacier to the foot of the col where fixed ropes are used to reach the North Col at 7,000m (23,000 ft). From the North Col, climbers ascend the rocky north ridge to set up Camp 2 at around 7,500m (24,750 ft). The route crosses the North Face in a diagonal climb to the base of the Yellow Band reaching the site of Camp 3 at 8,300m (27,390 ft). From Camp 3, climbers will make their final summit push.

Climbers face a treacherous traverse from the base of the First Step: 8,500m (27,890 ft), to the crux of the climb, the Second Step: 8,577m (28,140 ft). (The Second Step includes a climbing aid called the “Chinese ladder”, a metal ladder placed semi-permanently in 1975 by a party of Chinese climbers. It has been almost continuously in place since, and ladders have been used by virtually all climbers on the route.) Once above the Second Step the inconsequential Third Step is clambered over: 8,690m (28,140 ft). Once above these steps, the summit pyramid is climbed by means of a snow slope of 50 degrees, to the final summit ridge along which the top is reached: 8850m (29,035 ft)
